Rare, rich birds vs rare, poor orangutans?
by Tim Wilson, October 28, 2009
This BBC story caught my eye about rare birds in the United Kingdom doing well because of “targeted conservation action” which can be afforded, and is expected, by people in such a rich country. By comparison this story yesterday in The Age newspaper highlights the problems orangutans face in the developing world where conservation is a secondary concern to poverty alleviation. The issues are complex, but time and time again the message is clear – the best way to protect the environment is for people to be able to afford to do so.
